Chapter Eleven

The few times Mason had been in the diner, the place was packed. Instead of the hostess who usually manned the door, there was a sign asking customers to please seat themselves. Since he, Lexi, and Claire had arrived before the lunch crowd, they had their pick of places to sit.

“Why don’t we take a seat by the window,” Claire said as she hobbled between tables.

“Sounds good to me,” Mason said, placing his hand on Lexi’s lower back, urging her to go ahead of him.

Claire plopped down in the middle of one side of the booth, forcing Lexi to sit next to Mason. He was really starting to like the older woman.

Lexi groaned when Mason waited for her to slide in first, making it hard for her to go anywhere.

Once they’d placed their order, Mason leaned back to stretch out his legs and draped his arm along the back of the booth behind Lexi. They weren’t touching, but his arm was close enough to the back of her head to feel her silky hair brush against his skin.

His wolf wanted him to pull her close and nuzzle her neck so he could take in more of her scent, but given they weren’t a couple or even been out on their first date, Mason had to bide his time. It didn’t mean he’d hold back on subtly doing things that showed her he was interested, like pressing his thigh against hers to see how she’d react.

Claire studied Lexi and Mason over the rim of her glass, then after taking a sip of her iced tea, she asked, “So, how did you two meet?” The way she’d phrased the question made it sound as if Mason and Lexi were an actual couple. Hopefully, if Mason had his way, they would be, and soon.

Mason glanced at Lexi. “Didn’t you tell her about Peaches?”

“Not yet,” Lexi said.

“Did something bad happen to my goat?” Claire’s voice crackled.

“Peaches is fine.” Lexi glared at Mason. “We had a small adventure on the way home.” She flicked her wrist. “It wasn’t anything serious, so I forgot to mention it.”

Claire settled back in her seat. “We’ve got time, so why don’t you tell me about this non-eventful adventure now.”

Before Lexi could answer, the waitress arrived with their food. They’d all ordered a different variation of a burger platter. Mason had gotten one with extras of everything.

“I guess I was hungrier than I thought,” Lexi said. “This looks great.” She quickly took a bite of her sandwich, no doubt hoping Claire would forget what they’d been talking about.

“So.” Claire twirled her fork. “Let’s hear it.”

It turned out Lexi was a great storyteller. She provided Claire with in-depth details, starting with how Mason had accused her of trespassing, which led to her falling off the fence. He was pretty sure she’d done it intentionally to make him feel guilty or get even with him. It had been a long time since anyone had made him blush, and Lexi seemed to do it easily.
